Going Deep Into Koala Country on Australia’s Great Ocean Road

Going Deep Into Koala Country on Australia’s Great Ocean Road
There are really just eight Apostles, but they’re still amazing to look at. (All photos: Bill Fink)
The plan: Australia’s Great Ocean Road is rumored to be one of the best drives in the world, with awe-inspiring views, outdoor adventures, and “koalas falling from trees like a rain of coconuts.” Or that’s what the guy in the pub told me, anyway. It sounds good. But is it “great”? I hopped in a rental car to find out.
The route: The Great Ocean Road winds about 150 miles along the southern coast of Australia, beginning south of Melbourne in the surf town of Torquay and ending near the fairyland setting of emus, wallabies, and dollhouse-like cottages in Port Fairy.
The car: A standard rental Toyota Camry. But something is odd about it. Ah yes, the steering wheel is on the right-hand side. I realize it may be a challenge to simultaneously enjoy the views and remember to drive on the left side of the road.

Bathing Beauties
Miss Geelong, 1937, welcomes me to the port town of Geelong, the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. Despite her age, she’s still a perky girl, with erect, um, posture, posing next to a few other bathing beauties. She’s one of over a hundred carved and painted timber posts recovered from the harbor to make up theBollard Trail along the parks of the restored Geelong Waterfront. Bars, cafés, restaurants, playgrounds, swimming areas, and even a vintage steam-driven 1890s carousel create a festive atmosphere reminiscent of the town’s glory days in the early 20th century. The Geelong Wine Region, scattered along the coast and nearby valleys, not only offers up some fun winery tours but also makes sure that local restaurants can provide me tastes of the best of the “cool climate” varietals.
Torquay surf
Looks pretty easy to us.
Surfing Safari
The town of Torquay, the official beginning of the Great Ocean Road, is famous for its great ocean surfing. Completely by chance while I’m there, I stumble upon day one of the international Rip Curl Pro surfing competition at Bells Beach. The best surfers in the world are making acrobatic moves on 10-foot waves look almost easy enough to lure me into the ocean to try a set. But I think better of it and focus on the town’s land attractions, including the Surf World Museum and the Surf City Plaza complex, containing the original stores for Quicksilver and Rip Curl brands. As I continue down the road along the Surf Coast, nearly every beach has surfers paddling out into the breaks. When the beaches disappear and the cliffs become more sheer, the road recalls the winding turns and dramatic viewpoints of California’s Pacific Coast Highway.
Memorial Arch
An arch near the 12 Apostles.
Memorial Arch
The Great Ocean Road’s resemblance to the Pacific Coast Highway is not coincidental — the California road was used as a model when the project began in 1918. Three thousand workers on the highway were mostly returning Australian servicemen from World War I who essentially carved the road out of precarious cliffside rocks over the next 12 years. TheMemorial Arch at Eastern View past Aireys Inlet commemorates both their effort and their fallen comrades in the war. The entire Ocean Road itself is dedicated to the soldiers killed in World War I, making it perhaps the largest memorial in the world.
koala tree
How do those koalas stay up there?
Koalas and Kangaroos
It seems like a cliché, but as advertised, roadside trees and fields are practically infested with cute, furry creatures. The koalas are not falling onto cars, as my drunken pub buddy warned, but they do look to be dangerously dozing off on branches overhanging the road. I see at least a dozen in what must have been a particularly tasty grove of eucalyptus trees on one curve along the Surf Coast. Kangaroos are actually considered a nuisance in many areas, messing the well-groomed grounds of gardens and golf courses at Anglesea, and jumping into traffic without warning at night, causing accidents all along the Great Ocean Road. But as I watch them hop along through fields roadside, I can’t help but be entertained by their goofy gait. The cows in the nearby pasture remain unimpressed.
rainforest maits rest
The rainforest along the Maits Rest trail.
Jurassic Park Down Under
A rainforest? This road really does have everything. It seems like a different world from the sunny beach party of Surf City, but only a slight detour off the road leads me to the Great Otway National Park and the Maits Rest trail, where I walk along boardwalks through a thick jungle of giant ferns, mossy trees, and rushing waterfalls. I half-expect a velociraptor to come charging from the primeval forest, but it fortunately remains only a peaceful interlude along the drive. Had I come by at night, I could have checked out the glow worms wiggling around in the mossy grounds of Melba Gully.

An important driving tip.
12 Apostles
One of the highlights of the trip is seeing the collection of jagged limestone stacks jutting up to 80 feet high from the ocean on the approach to Port Campbell. Called the 12 Apostles, for their stark, lonely stance amid the crashing waves, the collection has actually never had more than nine of the pillars (and now there are eight after erosion toppled one into the sea in 2005). They were created millions of years ago from the ocean’s constant battering at the cliffs: First, arches were created in hollowed-out segments, and then the bridges to the mainland eventually collapsed, leaving only the iconic rock towers. You’ll know you’re getting close when you see the tour buses. Despite lingering on the cliffside boardwalk for a while watching waves blast into a large arch, I don’t see any collapse imminent, so I leave the remaining eight apostles to their duty guarding the shore.

Surfing + lighthouse + rainbow = a very scenic photo at Aireys Inlet Beach.
Port Campbell
Along the appropriately named Shipwreck Coast, the small town of Port Campbell houses the noted Surf Life Saving Club, where I watch trainees undergo some exhausting lifesaving practice sessions in the high, cold surf. Above the town, I hike the three-mile Discovery Walk along cliff tops overlooking the Southern Ocean, leaving the shelter of the bay to once again witness the power of the sea crashing into the rocks. Seabirds fly up squawking from their nests, the wind whips across the exposed plateau, and I’m glad I’m not a sailor trying to find a safe port of call. I retire to a local motel and rest up for the return trip.
beach cricket australia
Some beach cricket at Lady Bay.
End of the Road—and a Beginning
The Great Ocean Road officially ends once it connects with the A1 outside of Warrnambool. But I extend the trip to check out the old fishing town and nearby Port Fairy. The Port of Warrnambool once handled more cargo than Melbourne, but the town is better known now for its artisan foods (check outAllansford Cheese World!), craft shops, and outdoor activities. I drop by the beach at Lady Bay, where rather than volleyball or soccer, families are living up to their colonial heritage and playing games of cricket on the sand.
I briefly consider continuing west, where just another 2,000 miles will bring me to Perth, but I’ve been told about the newly launched “12 Apostles Gourmet Trail” heading inland from the Great Ocean Road. The lure of wine, cheese, fresh strawberries, and some artisan whiskey amid rolling farmland is irresistible, and perhaps an explanation for what happened to all those missing apostles in the ocean — they’ve gone inland to “have a feed.”
great ocean road sign
While my drive on the Great Ocean Road covered less than 200 miles over three days, it still seemed that there was a great deal of stuff I missed out on. Next time, I’ll take it even slower, perhaps by foot, trekking the 60-mile Great Ocean Walk to catch every last attraction — and perhaps a falling koala.

Hair and Makeup Outsmarts Computers, Makes You Un-taggable on Social Media

Hair and Makeup Outsmarts Computers, Makes You Un-taggable on Social Media
Have you ever been tagged in a Facebook or Instagram photo against your wishes? That all changes now, thanks to a creative new beauty invention. Adam Harvey, an artist, designer, and entrepreneur based in Brooklyn, N.Y., created Computer Vision Dazzle (or CV Dazzle) for his thesis project at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. By applying black and white makeup or arranging hair in the right pattern combinations it blocks those intuitive facial-recognition algorithms from detecting a face in any photo.
“My goal, back when I first created it in 2010, was to prove that face detection could be blocked using only hair and makeup,” says Harvey. “By reverse engineering a computer vision profile I can understand what the algorithm is looking for to detect a face— symmetry, contours in the cheekbones, and the nose bridge—and obscure those areas and create an ‘anti-face.’” The look is an outrageous one, but Harvey intended it as an eccentric, high-fashion look that could work in a club setting. “An interesting parallel is that fashion is all about staying a season ahead of the latest trend, and surveillance is about staying ahead as well. Fashion by its nature is about not conforming and reinventing itself, and it actually provides a partial answer to some surveillance issues.”
Preventing social media tagging is just one benefit of this invention. When computer vision programs detect a face, they can extract data about your gender, age, emotions, and identity and share this information with everyone from the FBI to advertisers. “Your face print is like your social security number, and when you walk around in public you don’t typically expect people to be accessing something like that,” says Harvey. There’s a program called Janus that collects images in the wild and pieces them into identity profiles and shares them with intelligence agencies. Advertisers are more of a threat to the mainstream, though. “If they’re collecting data on your gender, age, mood, and identity, how do you opt out?”
Here’s where CV Dazzle comes in, to work in the opposite way of traditional makeup. “When you define your mouth, outline your eyes, or contour your cheeks, you’re actually making it easier to detect your face,” says Harvey. “Decontouring will decrease the probability that your face will show up.”
And unlike most elevated beauty looks, this one is dirt cheap for consumers. You can use any makeup as long as you use contrasting shades. If you have light skin or hair, add dark makeup and hair to create patterns, that help prevent computers from spotting you. And if you have dark skin or hair, do the opposite. Harvey works with a makeup artist, but says the best cosmetics to use are those that won’t crack apart on the skin. Metallic or reflective makeup will only further confuse the tracking algorithms. “There’s no one way to wear it.” In fact, it’s better camouflage when people come up with a unique design,” says Harvey. “The irony is, you create patterns, and computers are great at learning patterns.” To that end, he’s been working on a software application that will allow people to create their own designs.
As technology continues to change and become more sophisticated, innovators like Harvey need to keep moving with the times. Early this fall he’ll be launching a surveillance trend report with new fashion items and products, but he’s happy with the progress being made on CV Dazzle. “These algorithms are a multibillion dollar industry, but here’s a $1 solution.”

The Perfection Paradox: Yes, You Can Be TOO Healthy

The Perfection Paradox: Yes, You Can Be TOO Healthy

No one with an Internet connection is immune. Between the cleansing and juicing crazes, the macrobiotic-raw-gluten-free diets, and a bikini-clad Hilaria Baldwin head-standing in elevators and at the ATM, visions of perfect health are everywhere. Sure, these images can serve as motivation to hit the gym or resist that second (or third) glass of wine, but they can also make it difficult to distinguish between healthy and dangerous habits. “The underlying trait in people who are obsessed with health is perfectionism,” Bethany Marshall, PhD, a Beverly Hills-based psychotherapist, tells Yahoo Health. “On the surface, this trait seems admirable but it’s rooted in self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy. That person who can’t miss one workout or skips dinner with friends because they’re serving pasta — that’s often a soft sign of a bigger pie we call anxiety. If it spirals, it can become a full-blown anxiety disorder.”
And while we should all aim to be the best versions of ourselves, striving for the perfect state of health can wreak havoc on our bodies. “When taken to the extreme, behavior that is too healthful can lead to osteoporosis, joint problems, sprains, nutritional deficiency, and even reproductive issues,” Joseph Pinzone, MD, an internist and endocrinologist in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Health. It can also result in “Orthorexia,” which, while not an officially recognized eating disorder, is defined by the National Eating Disorders Association as a “fixation on righteous eating,” whereby a person obsesses about being healthy (only consuming foods with no pesticides or avoiding meals they haven’t prepared themselves, for example), not necessarily being thin.
A too-healthy regime can also lead to serious physiological problems. For example, air-popped popcorn is often touted as a low-cal alternative to salt-and-fat-laden potato chips and a major source ofpolyphenols, an antioxidant found in fresh produce. However, kernels in the microwave version contain compounds that cause lung diseaseand hamper immune function in kids when downed in frequent, large quantities. And turkey slices are an excellent source of lean protein, but many processed deli meats are loaded with salt and nitrates, which increases the risk of heart disease.
Eating too cleanly could also trigger more salt and fat cravings than usual, says Pinzone. That’s because back in caveman days, our ancestors — who consumed simple, high-fiber and high-protein foods — couldn't anticipate when their next meals would come. So when faced with highly caloric foods, it was hard to resist. Plus, it’s easy to convince ourselves that if a food is healthy, we can eat a lot of it. For example, almonds are a great source of heart-healthy, monounsaturated fat but one extra handful can exceed your fat intake for the day.
Even nutritional mainstays such as fruits and vegetables require aren't a magic bullet for weight-loss. One recent study conducted by the University of Alabama Birmingham found that despite the classic recommendation that eating lots of produce can help you drop pounds it simply isn’t true. "Across the board, all studies we reviewed showed a near-zero effect on weight loss," Kathryn Kaiser, an instructor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in a press release. "So I don't think eating more [fruits and vegetables] alone is necessarily an effective approach for weight-loss because just adding them on top of whatever foods a person may be eating is not likely to cause weight change.”
And hitting the gym too hard isn't good either. Overly vigorous exercise not only strains the heart, it can cut lives short. Researchconducted by the University of South Carolina found that while regular jogging raises life expectancy, runners who clock more than 20 miles per week — that’s just 2.85 miles per day — have a higher rate of death from various causes than more moderate runners. “I see people who come to the gym multiple times per day or at odd hours of the night,” Jay Cardiello, celebrity fitness trainer and nutrition expert, tells Yahoo Health. “But the body needs rest in order to function at its best. Take weight training — many people don’t realize that lifting destroys your muscles; during rest, the body is building strength. That’s why taking breaks from exercise is crucial.”
The key? Good old-fashioned moderation. “We live in a social media-heavy world where we feel like we’re never doing enough,” says Pinzone. “But taking the time to be mindful and balanced — asking yourself, ‘Is it more important to run that extra mile or see an old friend?’ — is the key to truly being happy and healthy.”

544-pound mako shark a new world record

The host of an outdoors television show has set a world record by catching a 544-pound mako shark … with bow and arrow.
Patrick Eger shot and reeled in the 10-foot mako in mid-June off Southern California. The catch, after a two-hour struggle, was recently approved as a world record by the Bowfishing Association of America. (It more than doubles the weight of the previous record.)
Eger, host of Big E TV and owner of Big E Outfitters in Central Wisconsin, posted a news release about his conquest Friday on the company Facebook page.

The catch was videotaped and will be featured in an upcoming show.
The group was fishing far offshore, near Santa Catalina Island, and the mako shark appeared in a slick of chum deployed to attract sharks.
“The mako is a very aggressive shark,” Eger told his hometown Post Crescent. “They are not afraid of anything. He came in to where the chum is coming from and starts hitting the boat, ramming the boat, sizing up the boat.”

Eger, 47, was armed for the occasion. He released a broad-head arrow attached to a steel leader tied to 200-pound monofilament, which ran to a big-game reel.
“Unlike a lot of ocean fishing, there’s no chair, and you’re not strapped into anything,” Eger said. “I stood the entire time, and the only thing I was strapped to was the pole. If the shark pulls anything in, he’s pulling the pole and myself in.”
The captain of the vessel was “Mako” Matt Potter, who has put conventional anglers on much larger makos, including a 1,323-pounder caught last year. (That catch was not submitted for record consideration. The International Game Fish Association lists a 1,221-pound mako as the rod-and-reel world record.)
In Eger’s news release, he explained that he and Potter chose to “harvest” the shark only after determining that it was large enough to set a record.
Some of the wording in the release is sure to be criticized by shark experts and conservationists, as it portrays the shark as a bloodthirsty killer, instead of a predator simply searching for the source of the scent, posing no threat to humans.
“On several passes the Killer Shark rammed the boat and made it known that it had no fear of the crew or anyone onboard,” the news release states. “With cameras rolling from all angles as the dangerous predator made another pass at the boat, Eger drew and released a single arrow from his Xcentric Bow … and made a perfect shot.”
The official weight was 544 pounds, 8 ounces, and the shark measured 10 feet, 6 inches.
The shark meat was said to have been donated to needy families in the Los Angeles area, “other than some that was taken by Eger to enjoy himself.”

6 cars that need to be revived

Photo: Aaron Lai | Flickr

The rumors are constantly flooding into our inboxes of cars X, Y and Z being revived with hybrid powertrains, all-wheel drive and a bunch of other claims that no one can really back up. But can you blame them? Of course I’d like to see a new Supra with 500 horsepower, or an RX-7 with twin-rotaries and a six-speed. For the most part though, we take these rumors with a grain of salt.

The fun part of it, really, is thinking about your favorite childhood cars coming back to life. Those icons of your generation living on in a new form. That being said, here’s six that we think need a new chance at life (click the links to see more):
DeLorean DMC-12

Great Scott, there are going to be a lot of puns in this paragraph! The iconic DeLorean gained fame as Doc Brown and Marty McFly’s ride of choice throughout the Back to the Future movie franchise. But realistically, the out-of-this-world design was what really sold it for many enthusiasts.

Now, more then ever, might be the perfect time for us to go back and bring this car to the future. I’m sorry.

Lancia Stratos

Lancia Stratos Stradale
Lancia Stratos Stradale

If the Lancia Stratos doesn’t induce hot flashes and/or tingly feelings in your underneath— you might want to check your pulse. Produced in 1972, it was an instant classic based on looks alone, not to mention a prestigious racing history to go along with it.

There was an attempt by some rich investor back in 2010 to bring the car back from the dead — and the retro-modern design was actually really stunning — but it was shut down by Ferrari never to be heard from again. It’s a shame, really.

Mazda RX-7

Any car nut that grew up in the 1990s will tell you that the RX-7 is a perfect car to revive. It is one of the most iconic sportscars of the 90s. Production started in 1978 and lasted all the way until 2002, but the “FD” final generation seen here is the one we lust after.

Rumors here and there have been hinting at a revival. But we’ll believe it when we see it. And we sure as hell hope we see it.

'Expendables 3' Leaks Online, Pirated Copy Downloaded 189,000 Times in 24 Hours
Expendables 3

A DVD-quality copy of actioner The Expendables 3, starring Sylvester Stallone, has been downloaded via piracy sites more than 189,000 times over a 24-hour period — three weeks ahead of the U.S. premiere.
The leak of the film on the Internet ahead of its theatrical debut, an unusually rare occurrence, could dampen box office for Expendables 3. It’s also worth noting that the target demo for the movie is young males, who are the biggest users of illegal file-sharing services.
With 21 days left to go before the Aug. 15 premiere, the number of illegal downloads of Expendables 3 will certainly soar into the millions.
Lionsgate, which is distributing the movie, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the leak. The original source of the pirated copy is unclear; user comments posted on piracy websites indicate the rip is genuine.
Pirated copies of Expendables 3 began cropping up on torrent-sharing sites Wednesday and downloads started to spike Thursday, according to data provided by piracy-analytics firm Excipio. As of 6 p.m. Eastern Thursday, the movie had been downloaded 189,052 times worldwide, with 42,216 of those in the U.S., according to Excipio.
Expendables 3 ensemble cast includes Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammar, Terry Crews, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford.
The first two Expendables movies, both starring Stallone, were released in mid-August in 2010 and 2012 by Lionsgate. The first installment grossed $275 million worldwide and the second took in more than $300 million.

Jennifer Lopez
Lopez's Ferocious

ennifer Lopez celebrated her 45th birthday in a fierce way.
The "First Love" singer was feted by pals at big bash Thursday night at Nammos New York in Southampton. The birthday girl was ready for the spotlight at the Greek restaurant/night club outfitted in pants and a sexy white bustier which showed off her fab abs. However, her outfit was nothing compared to her cake.
Lopez blew out the candles on a huge, colorful concoction featuring her own likeness riding a lion. Cake J.Lo was wearing an outfit inspired by her famed Grammy dress, a look she's recreated several times lately while promoting her new album, A.K.A..
As for whether or not Lopez actually tasted any of the cake, we're not sure. The mom-of-two's party outfit wasn't exactly cake-friendly in both color and cut. Nonetheless, "J.Lo was in a great celebratory mood," an insider at the party tells Yahoo. "She couldn't have been happier. She was with all of her closest friends having a blast. And she was on the dance floor forever."
So who were the party people she was celebrating with? Her BFF, Leah Remini, Fat Joe, Khloé Kardashian and French Montana, Scott Disick, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Andy Cohen, Dancing With the Stars pro Tony Dovolani, and cosmetics exec Loren Ridinger were all there. And before you ask, yes, Lopez's rumored love interest, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, made an appearance as well.
"She kept it mostly girls/friends only until Maks showed up sometime after midnight," says the insider. "She was happy to see him and he certainly was happy to see her. They were super flirty and just looked like they were having fun together. You could tell they weren't just friends. There is definitely something more going on there."
That sounds like bad news for Lopez's recent ex, Casper Smart. The backup dancer, who split with the American Idol judge in the springamid cheating rumors, posted a gushing birthday message for the star:
Exes aside, Lopez just seemed ready for a fun night out. As the festivities began, she took to Instagram to share a snap and wrote, "Let the games begin! #itsmyparty #funtimes #birthdaygirl #aintnuthingbutanumber."

Charlize Theron, Sean Penn Are Not Engaged, Actress Bought Ring Herself: Get the Details!

Charlize Theron, Sean Penn Are Not Engaged, Actress Bought Ring Herself: Get the Details!

Sean Penn hasn't put a ring on it—yet.
Despite widespread speculation to the contrary, Charlize Theron and Penn are not engaged, a source confirms exclusively to Us Weekly. The Mad Max: Fury Roadactress sparked rumors this week when she was photographed wearing a diamond ring (on that finger!) at LAX Airport on July 23.
Theron's stunning accessory is an Anita Ko Leaf Ring in 18k yellow gold—but it didn't come from Penn, a second insider tells Us. In fact, the South African beauty, 38, treated herself to the $4,900 piece of jewelry.
Theron and Penn, 53, were first spotted getting cozy back in January during a Hawaiian vacation, and have been very vocal about their romance in recent months. They've also attended a slew of events arm-in-arm, including Theron's A Million Ways to Die in the West L.A. premiere, the Met Gala, and even an Oscars afterparty hosted by Penn's ex-wife Madonna.
"A friend kind of stepped into that [romantic] role, and I really didn't see it coming," Theron recently said of the relationship in Vogue. "We were just really good friends. And it's been slow going because you are aware that you could screw that up and lose it. We had to think about it. But at the end of the day, it was somewhat effortless."
The couple may not be engaged now, but a wedding is on their radar. As previously reported, the twosome have plans to wed this summer and adopt a sibling for Theron's 2-year-old son Jackson.
"Sean is revitalized with Charlize," a source told Us. "They want to get married very soon." It would be the first marriage for Theron and the third for Penn, who divorced second wife Robin Wright in 2010 after 14 years of marriage.

Kids are perceptive!LeAnn Rimes and husband Eddie Cibrian revealed toExtra's Mario Lopezon Wednesday, July 23, that they have discussed their marital affair with the actor's two sons, Mason andJake.
"The kids actually came to us," Rimes, 31, said of her stepsons, "and asked very nonchalantly over dinner."
How did the singer and her husband respond? "Eddie was very honest with them in a way that you can be with a 7-year-old and 11-year-old," Rimes revealed. "He's always the first person to say how much he loves me, and they see that in our house, and they feel that, so I think it’s important not to lie to children. They understand way more."
She elaborated: "We both never want them to come back and say, 'You weren’t honest with us about this,'" she explained to Lopez. "They're very open with us, which is cool."
Cibrian shares Mason and Jake with his ex-wife Brandi Glanville. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 41, and the For Better or Worse actor, 41, have a long and contentious history: The two divorced in 2010 after Cibrian cheated with Rimes. Their most recent public spat took place in February after Glanville alleged that her ex asked her to pay child support, which Cibrian denied.
"2 all these young unmarried bloggers writing about getting over divorce & not seeing ur children grow up 1/2 the time, walk a mile in my shoes," Glanville tweeted.
Rimes and Cibrian have most recently used their VH1 reality showLeAnn & Eddie as a platform to air their daily lives—and complaints. In one preview, Cibrian took a jab at Glanville saying: "Contrary to what some people think [coughs] my ex-wife, I actually do work."

Unfinished Documentary About Unfinished Nicolas Cage Superman Movie Gets Trailer

The feature-length documentary film about the unfinished “Superman Lives” film is nearing completion. In an effort to raise the finishing funds for The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened?, producer/director Jon Schnepp released a full trailer featuring plenty of footage from the original film’s early production, as well as interviews with almost everyone involved in the film, except for its roster of actors.
Director Tim Burton and original screenwriter Kevin Smith were joined on screen by many people involved behind the scenes on Superman Lives, including producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, production designer Rick Heinrichs, screenwriter Wesley Strick, costume designer Colleen Atwood, special effects supervisor Steve Johnson, storyboard artist Tim Burgard, and associate producer Derek Frey.
In the trailer, they talked about the unique take on the character they were hoping to explore, emphasizing his alien nature. But the story ofSuperman Lives is just one of many permutations in the Superman film saga over the span of a decade beginning in the mid-1990s.
Smith pitched his original outline in 1996, and it would be ten years of rewrites and false starts with the character before Superman Returns hit theaters.
While Smith wanted eventual Batman Ben Affleck as Superman, things changed when Tim Burton signed on to direct. He had his own ideas, and before too long Nicolas Cage was involved. Other names attached to the film included Kevin Spacey (who would become Lex Luthor inSuperman Returns), Tim Allen, Courteney Cox, Chris Rock and Michael Keaton, who may or may not have reprised his role as Batman.
It’s clear from the trailer that Schnepp is passionate about digging into the meat of his story, gathering an impressive array of involved people to talk about what went right, what went wrong, and what they were hoping to accomplish in Superman Lives.
He even had commentary provided by comic book professionals like Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp and Kerry Gammill, lending their expertise about the world of superheroes and the comic book community.
Schnepp is attempting to raise $85,000 to complete post production on the film, via his crowd-funding page at FanBacked.com. The bulk of the film was completed after a prior successful prior crowd-funding effort. As a reward for contributing, Schnepp is offering things like posters, signed Blu-rays and DVDs, t-shirts, and even hand-made action figures, as well as a variety of producer credits.
